⁹ During the night Paul had a vision^(A) of a man of Macedonia^(B) standing and begging him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” ¹⁰ After Paul had seen the vision, we^(C) got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel^(D) to them.

Lydia’s Conversion in Philippi

¹¹ From Troas^(E) we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samothrace, and the next day we went on to Neapolis. ¹² From there we traveled to Philippi,^(F) a Roman colony and the leading city of that district^[a] of Macedonia.^(G) And we stayed there several days.

¹³ On the Sabbath^(H) we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. ¹⁴ One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira^(I) named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart^(J) to respond to Paul’s message. ¹⁵ When she and the members of her household^(K) were baptized,^(L) she invited us to her home. “If you consider me a believer in the Lord,” she said, “come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us.

The New Jerusalem, the Bride of the Lamb

⁹ One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues^(A) came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the bride,^(B) the wife of the Lamb.” ¹⁰ And he carried me away^(C) in the Spirit^(D) to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.^{(E) 11} It shone with the glory of God,^(F) and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper,^(G) clear as crystal.^{(H) 12} It had a great, high wall with twelve gates,^(I) and with twelve angels at the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel.^{(J) 13} There were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south and three on the west. ¹⁴ The wall of the city had twelve foundations,^(K) and on them were the names of the twelve apostles^(L) of the Lamb.

²¹ The twelve gates^(A) were twelve pearls,^(B) each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of gold, as pure as transparent glass.^(C)

²² I did not see a temple^(D) in the city, because the Lord God Almighty^(E) and the Lamb^(F) are its temple. ²³ The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God^(G) gives it light,^(H) and the Lamb^(I) is its lamp. ²⁴ The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it.^{(J) 25} On no day will its gates^(K) ever be shut,^(L) for there will be no night there.^{(M) 26} The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it.^{(N) 27} Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful,^(O) but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.^(P)

²³ In that day^(A) you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.^{(B) 24} Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive,^(C) and your joy will be complete.^(D)

²⁵ “Though I have been speaking figuratively,^(E) a time is coming^(F) when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. ²⁶ In that day you will ask in my name.^(G) I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. ²⁷ No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me^(H) and have believed that I came from God.^{(I) 28} I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”^(J)

²⁹ Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.^{(K) 30} Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe^(L) that you came from God.”^(M)

³¹ “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. ³² “A time is coming^(N) and in fact has come when you will be scattered,^(O) each to your own home. You will leave me all alone.^(P) Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.^(Q)

³³ “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.^(R) In this world you will have trouble.^(S) But take heart! I have overcome^(T) the world.”

The Healing at the Pool

5 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. ² Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate^(A) a pool, which in Aramaic^(B) is called Bethesda^[a] and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. ³ Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. ^{[4] [b] 5} One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. ⁶ When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”

⁷ “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”

⁸ Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”^{(C) 9} At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.
